At this point, you are standing in the ditch and to your left is a steep gorge. There may have been a drawbridge here, which could be pulled up if there was an attack. Today, the damp conditions of the ditch are ideal for Golden Saxifrage and Creeping Buttercup and the defensive banks are clothed with primroses, bluebells, orchids and other woodland plants.
